We have another Poetry Ruckus coming up on June 19th at Ducky Waddle’s Emporium (414 N Coast Hwy 101) and it will feature none other than Old Hermit Named Dave. Dave is a permanent fixture at Winston’s in Ocean Beach. Well known around the comedy circuit for his riffs on daily news headlines, Dave is also a poet who is fiercely critical of religion and politics. He’s legitimately a hermit, which means we have to drive down to OB to pick him up. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the Hermit perform outside of his OB cave! And if you like what you see–or better yet–if you don’t like his set, you can see Dave get roasted for his 80th birthday party on July 12th in his natural habitat (Winston’s in OB of course).

We think Amerikan Bear sounds like the progeny of Jerry Lee Lewis and his 16 year old cousin/wife singing with Steppenwolf as the backing band. But here is what Amerikan Bear actually sounds like:

We think Amerikan Bear will be huge one day. He’s already over six feet.

Amerikan Bear will be playing a free show tonight (Sat 5/4) at 7 PM and giving out free CD’s of that song before they perform at at Seaweed and Gravel (1144 N Coast Hwy 101). They will also be ‘releasing’ a Honda motorcycle, though we’re not sure if that means into the wild or off a cliff or what. Better show up and find out.

In his song “Hate Me Now” (featuring Puff Daddy) , Nas brags:

While we don’t doubt that Nas has lots of honeys attracted to his money, he has never actually won a Pulitzer Prize for his poetry. Our next guest at the Poetry Ruckus, however, did win a 2010 Pulitzer Prize for her Poetry. In our estimation, this would make Rae Armantrout cooler than Nas and Puff Daddy combined. Here’s a short list of Rae Armantrout’s accolades from wikipedia.org:

On March 11, 2010, Armantrout was awarded the 2009 National Book Critics Circle Award for her book of poetry Versed published by the Wesleyan University Press, which had also been nominated for the National Book Award.^[1] The book later earned the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Armantrout’s most recent collection, Just Saying, was published in February 2013. She is the recipient of numerous other awards for her poetry, including an award in poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2007 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008.^[2]

Rae is a professor of Poetry and Poetics at UCSD and a long time San Diego local. She is an original member of the West Coast Language poets group and her most recent book is titled, Just Saying.

This eclectic trio features Dillon Casey on guitar, Tim Mcnalley on bass and Kirk Portuguez on drums. These three also play with In Motion  Trio, a band that one 2011′s SD Music Award for best jazz group.

We’re gonna miss this crazy bastard. Derek Paul Firenze is moving to Seattle, where the climate is more suited, it would seem, to sucking the melancholy from a Marlboro and postulating eternity’s pen through the down pour. It was over three years ago at the first ever Poetry Ruckus at Ducky Waddle’s that we first met Derek and were introduced to his style. Ejaculating loudly from the stage like a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company on various psychedelics, Derek has made us laugh, cry and hurl. He’s pushed the boundaries of written word and performance in imaginative directions that could only have originated from his uniquely mixed up cerebral stew. And now we bid him adieu for a few years until he gets sick of the rain or writes the Epic poem of America.

Glassless Minds and Ruthless Hippies collaborated at Roadside Park this week for a sweet little promo/preview clip of fun things to come in Leucadia on April 4th, and it ended up on the front page of the Encinitas Patch today!

That Thursday night from 5:30-8:30 PM will be Food for Thought: A Taste of Leucadia presented by the Leucadia 101 Main Street Association. Fourteen amazing restuarants in Leucadia will be dishing out samples and the tickets are only $20 in advance  (click to purchase)!!! All the best restaurants in town are throwing down: Le Papagayo, Hapi Fish, Pandora’s Pizza, Fish 101, Robbie’s/Vigilucci’s, Juanitas, El Torito Market, Kotija’s Jr, Cafe Ipe and even some new kids on the block like Coffee Sugar & Tea, Foodie Amor, Dos Palmas Bakery and Grill and Solterra Winery.

And boy do we Ruthless Hippies have some fun entertainment coming your way. There will be an open poetry reading/ruckus at Roadside park (corner of Leucadia Blvd and Hwy 101) hosted by Hurd Sims, with guest poet Rolland Tizuela (featured in the clip up top). If you would like to read just head over to the park and add your name to the list.

As for the music, we’ve got great local acts such as the jazzy and original Mike Rudolph and the insanely funky one man band, Jonny Tarr, with more to come. And over at Cafe Ipe at 7 PM there will be a performance by Tomorow’s Tulips! This band features OC shredders Alex Knost on guitar/vox and Ford Archbold on bass, also with Christina Kee on drums. I would describe them as kind of like the Jesus and Mary Chain only better at surfing and less Scottish.

Just about every Wednesday night, the Daley Double Saloon (546 S. Coast Hwy 101) has live music. Since it’s ‘the Saloon’, they don’t announce it with posters or on their websites or nothin’. Especially not when it’s really good music. Recent shows have included Ray Barbee jamming with Adrian Demain and a DJ set from members of Foster the People. But luckily, Ruthless Hippies are here to blow the cover on a sweet show @ Saloon tonight for all 35 people who read our blog (we love and treasure all 35 of you): Mrs. Magician and Ditches.

Mrs. Magician is a fairly new San Diego punk band on Swami Records that’s been blowing up quickly as of late. Who knows? This may be the last time you get to see them in a small San Diego club. They’re hooks are damn catchy and they’re lyrics range from blunt to slyly satirical. We feel like the curia should be jamming to this one as they elect a new pope…

Also, get there by 9 PM to check out Ditches, a sick ass crew of Leucadia loc’s making some quality rock tunes. Here’s a fun instrumental jam they did for korduroy.tv recently…
