Danny Salzhandler is one busy guy. This weekend he’s putting on two of the biggest events in town. On Friday night (5/18) from 7-9 PM at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum (450 Quail Gardens Drive), Danny, the 101 Artists Colony and the Full Moon Poets will be hosting Poetry Slam Under the Big Top. It will be a lot of fun like the La Paloma Slams, only a bit more circus-like as it takes place under a big ole circus tent! No cover, but donations will be collected for the poets’ prizes and also to benefit the San Dieguito heritage Museum.
The very next day (Saturday 5/19from 12-4) at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum will be a deep pit BBQ bonanza with live music, kids activities and silent auctions. Check the museum’s website for more info on both of these events.
Skip to Sunday (5/20) and you can find Danny at Seaside Market/Cardiff Town Center unveiling the infamous Arts Alive Banners of 2012. The 101 Artist Colony in conjunction with the Main Street Associations of Cardiff, Encinitas and Leucadia celebrate north county’s local artists every year by having 101 of them paint these beautiful banners which are hung on light posts all along the highway 101. On Sunday, the banners are live auctioned to benefit the 101 Artists Colony. Minimum bids start at $150 and all banners can be viewed here.
The banners caused a big political brouhaha this year when the image of late City Councilwoman Maggie Houlihan on the backs of each banner was deemed a violation of city code. Vinyl stickers were placed over this homage to Houlihan who died while in office and was a dedicated supporter of the arts throughout her life. Thanks to the threat of litigation by Maggie’s widower, the ACLU and the Coast Law Group, City Council voted 4-1 (only Gaspar against) to allow the banner to be resubmitted for approval–which it was. I guess this all makes the banners collector’s items, so buy one!
Countless volunteer hours and about $1,000 were spent in the process of covering up the image and then peeling the stickers off again and chemically scrubbing the adhesive.
See Danny. See Danny peel!

In other news, a music and art event will be held this Sunday from 12-5 at Ducky Waddles Emporium (414 N Coast Highway 101). DJ Edify will spin vinyls and the Diamond Nightz from OB will lay down their funky hip hop. Don’t miss this awesome free event!
